David Birney is an American actor, writer, and producer. He is best known for his roles in the television series St. Elsewhere, Bridget Loves Bernie, and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. He has also appeared in films such as The Sting, The Hindenburg, and The Day of the Dolphin. Birney was born in Washington, D.C. on April 23, 1939. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a degree in English literature. Birney began his acting career in the 1960s, appearing in television shows such as The Virginian, The Fugitive, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. He made his feature film debut in The Sting (1973). In the 1980s, Birney starred in the television series St. Elsewhere, for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award. He also starred in the sitcom Bridget Loves Bernie (1972-1973) and the soap opera Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman (1976-1977). He was married to actress Meredith Baxter from 1974 to 1989, and they have three children together. He is currently married to actress Stephanie Zimbalist.
