Jerry Markbreit is an American former official in the National Football League (NFL). He was born on March 23, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois. He is best known for his long career as an NFL referee, during which he officiated four Super Bowls and was the referee for the 1985 Chicago Bears' Super Bowl XX victory. Markbreit began his NFL officiating career in 1976 and retired in 1998. He was the first referee to wear a microphone during a game, which he did during the 1989 season. He was also the first referee to wear a wireless microphone during a game, which he did during the 1995 season. Markbreit has been inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame and the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the NFL Referees Association.
