Mamie Till Mobley was an American civil rights activist and the mother of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African-American boy who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955. She was born on November 23, 1921, in Webb, Mississippi, to parents Willie Carthan and Alma Carthan. Mamie Till Mobley was a teacher and a civil rights activist. She was a member of the NAACP and the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. She was also a founding member of the Emmett Till Players, a theater group that performed plays about civil rights. Mamie Till Mobley was a strong advocate for justice for her son and for civil rights. She was a vocal critic of the Jim Crow laws and the racism that was rampant in the South. She was also a strong advocate for education and worked to ensure that African-American children had access to quality education. Mamie Till Mobley passed away on January 6, 2003, at the age of 81. She was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007 for her work in the civil rights movement.
