Paul Avery was an American journalist and author who was born on April 2, 1934 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was best known for his investigative reporting on the Zodiac Killer case in San Francisco in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Avery attended the University of Hawaii and graduated with a degree in journalism in 1956. After college, he worked as a reporter for the Honolulu Advertiser and then moved to San Francisco in 1962 to work for the San Francisco Chronicle. At the Chronicle, Avery covered a variety of stories, including the Zodiac Killer case. He was one of the first reporters to cover the case and wrote extensively about it. He also wrote a book about the case, The Zodiac Killer Cover-Up, which was published in 1972. Avery was also a contributing editor for Rolling Stone magazine and wrote for other publications, including the San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco Bay Guardian. Avery died on August 10, 2000, at the age of 66.
