When Pope John Paul II ordered John XXIII's remains exhumed from their initial resting place in the catacombs below St. Peter's Basilica in March 2001, the face and body were found to be perfectly preserved despite almost 40 years of internment.

On September 3, 2000, Pope John XXIII was beatified (declared "Blessed") by Pope John Paul II, making him eligible for canonization (sainthood) if it is demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and the Pope that he has interceded with God to perform a miracle.
