Wayne Jackson is an American musician, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his work as a trumpet and horn player for the legendary Stax Records label. He has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayes, and Booker T. & the M.G.'s. Jackson was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and began playing the trumpet at the age of nine. He attended Manassas High School, where he was a member of the school's marching band. After graduating, he joined the United States Air Force, where he served as a trumpet player in the Air Force Band. Jackson began his professional career in the early 1960s, playing with local bands in Memphis. He soon joined the house band at Stax Records, where he played on some of the label's most iconic recordings. He also worked as a session musician for other labels, including Atlantic Records and Hi Records. In addition to his work as a musician, Jackson has also produced and arranged music for a variety of artists, including Al Green, The Bar-Kays, and The Staple Singers. He has also composed music for television and film, including the theme song for the television show "In the Heat of the Night." Jackson has been inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame and the Musicians Hall of Fame. He continues to perform and record music, and is currently working on a new album.
